Communication is Key

Communication is the Key

Regular communication with your child’s teachers is vital to student success.  It is important that you get the phone numbers and e-mail addresses of your child’s teachers and principals at the beginning of each school year.  If you have a problem in communicating with your child’s teacher or team, try to address it as soon as possible.  Different opinions are not necessarily a sign of a problem.  They can show that staff is truly concerned about your student.  Listen and communicate your input calmly and clearly.

Suggested steps to take:

  • Your first step should be scheduling a meeting with your child’s teacher to identify the problem and look for a solution.
  • The school counselor, social worker, psychologist or teacher consultants are all staff persons who you can contact in trying to resolve a problem.
  • If your student has an Individualized Education Program (IEP), the Director of Special Education can be contacted at 313-203-3176, if there is no resolution with the building administrator.
  • If you have tried all of the above and you still have concerns, you may contact Wayne County RESA Special Education and Early Intervention Services at (734) 532-1494.
